About the Tua-Tiu-Tiann International Festival of Arts

The Begining

Tua-Tiu-Tiann, (also written as "Twatutia" and known as "Dadaocheng" in Mandarin Chinese), was the center of a major cultural movement in Taiwan during the 1920s. Having started as a trading port in the mid-19th century, Tua-Tiu-Tiann became the center for performing arts with a large cluster of theaters where actors, musicians and acrobats honed their skills. Today, as 2020 draws near, we hope to make Tua-Tiu-Tiann the center of yet another cultural movement that makes a lasting impact on Taiwan and the rest of the world. We look forward to a nurturing a new generation of artists, with Tua-Tiu-Tiann serving as a place for new ideas and a portal to a rich history.

Together We Roar

"TTTIFA's main theme is the spirit of “Kyousou (狂騷) Twenties,” the Japanese translation of the “Roaring Twenties," the phrase coined in the West to describe flourishing economic times and cultural innovations, embodied in the Art Deco movement and emergence of jazz music during the 1920s. "Kyousou" literally means "madness" and "disturbance," but we like to interpret this word as "creativity." As the spirit of the "Roaring Twenties" tapped into a reactionary energy to challenge traditional norms and spark social change, we look forward to what will emerge during the 2020s."

Time Machine Theater

"Held every October in the Tua-Tiu- Tiann district of Taipei, the TTTIFA began in 2015 by a joint venture of entrepreneurs and organizations from the area: Bookstore 1920s, Che Zhi Theatre (Thinkers’ Theatre) and the Chiang Wei- shui Cultural Foundation. TTTIFA's mission is to hold innovative arts performances that embrace interdisciplinary work and cross-cultural cooperation. In doing so, TTTIFA aims to nurture a platform for Taiwanese and international artists to work together."
